How ratings & tiers work
Every game moves your rating twice. First, the team result: an Elo exchange against the other side's average rating, so beating a stronger lobby pays more and losing to a weaker one costs more. Second, your personal performance: kill efficiency plus damage output, compared to what was expected of your rating in that lobby. The result decides the direction, performance sizes the move: winners always gain, losers always pay. A great game on a loss loses less; it never profits.
Your first 3 games are placement, played unranked while the system finds your level. Until game 5 your rating is provisional (shown dimmed) and moves faster on purpose, so new players reach their real tier quickly. Everyone starts at 1500.
The ladder never inflates: the team exchange is symmetric (the winners' pot equals the losers'), and when an outlier performance hits its cap the trimmed points simply evaporate — nobody is ever handed points that someone else didn't lose. A tier means the same thing next season as it does today.

Beating the same team on repeat pays less. An arena night is a small pool of eight or ten players. The console balances teams by rating, but a lobby can also keep its teams fixed all session, and then nothing stops an unbroken streak against the same opponents. So it pays less as it grows: your first 2 wins in a row against the same matchup pay in full; from the 3rd on, each further win pays 80% of the previous one, down to a floor of 25%.
One lost game resets the counter. A session that trades wins never feels this; only an unbroken streak does. And breaking a streak pays in full, plus the upset bonus Elo already gives it. Counters reset every day: it's not how much you play, it's how varied you play.
Full price again the moment the other side takes one, the matchup changes, or a new day starts.
Stop playing and your rating slips. Once you're placed, every 14 days without a ranked game costs 50 points, and it keeps slipping while you're away — down to a floor of 1500, where everyone starts. Only inactivity is floored: losing games can still take you lower, and a rating already at or below 1500doesn't decay at all. There is one clock across every ladder: a ranked game in any mode resets it for all your ratings at once, so they only slip while you're not playing ranked at all — never for favouring one mode over another.
Coming back doesn't hand the points back. You resume from where decay left you and climb again by playing: the comeback game is priced from the decayed rating, not the one you left on. The ladder shows who's sharp now, not who peaked once and walked away.
One ranked game — in any mode — resets the clock; the points don't spring back, you build up again from the decayed rating.
